The Bodliean Library

Vanbrugh House Library - Copy (3) - Copy.jpg

For those who don’t know it the Bodleian library is the main research library in Oxford and it’s one of the oldest libraries in the world and it just oozes history.

Ghost wise there are endless reports of activity but the most common ones that we were looking out for are:

Upper Reading Room - Charles I is famous as a ghost all over England. He’s seen with his army, in various houses and where he was executed but for our purposes his spirit has been seen many times here, holding a book

Map room – At least once a month sounds of sobbing can be heard in late evening as the library closes

Schools Quadrangle – Often the sounds of running when there’s no one about

I did my research in the weeks before, interviewing witnesses and identifying the hotspots we wanted to focus on. Access is easy during the day and we got come solid control shots in preparation.

I’d arranged access during the evening and over night and we arrived early evening and set up what we could before the librarians left.

There were 3 of us and we had one camera, with nightvision,  a couple of dictaphones for sound recording and a thermal sensor.

The night was eventful, we didn’t get anything on camera but we do have some sound recordings of sobbing and the thermal sensor showed very low temperatures in the Upper Reading room on one side only, along a specific path.

Edit – reviewing the footage on the camera back later did reveal some artifacts on screen that none of us recall during filming. This will form the basis of a second visit later in the year
